AUGUST 26, 2019, San Diego, CA - Humanitarian literacy nonprofit Millie’s Bookshelf is proud to announce it has been awarded a grant from The Pollination Project - a movement that seeks to unleash goodness and expand compassion all over the world by funding a different project every single day.
“We are equal parts thrilled and honored to be awarded this grant,” said Millie’s Bookshelf Executive Director Katie Howland. “This is a tremendous win for Millie’s that would not have been possible without the hard work and constant dedication of the entire Millie’s team.”
The funding will be invested in the translation of Millie’s data collection tools from English into Arabic. These tools are a critical part of our literacy programs, helping Millie’s ensure positive program impact and make curriculum adjustments as necessary.
MiIlie’s literacy programs are designed to provide children ages 4-6 with invaluable opportunities to develop pre-literacy skills that are crucial for emotional, cognitive, and socio-economic development. Each program is led by a qualified refugee staff member who lives in the community and is trained in program implementation and data collection procedures by Millie's Bookshelf staff. At the end of each program session, children and their parents are encouraged to check out a library book to continue their learning at home.
Millie’s will launch its pilot literacy program in Za’atari Refugee Camp in Mafraq, Jordan in spring 2020. With invaluable support from The Pollination Project and our field partner, the Jordan Health Aid Society, Millie’s Bookshelf looks forward to making the world a little brighter for refugee children, one book at a time.
